A shared mission to support girl-led leadership across 153 countries
The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts is a global movement that empowers girls and young women to develop their full potential as leaders and changemakers. With 153 Member Organizations worldwide, WAGGGS creates learning, advocacy and community spaces through non-formal education and global programmes. To bring this mission online, WAGGGS needed more than a website or LMS. It needed a safe, multilingual and flexible digital home where leaders, volunteers and young women could learn together, connect across borders and participate confidently. Open Social became that foundation through Campfire, WAGGGS’ global community collaboration platform.

Why WAGGGS chose Open Social
Before Campfire, WAGGGS faced fragmented information, language gaps, limited access to opportunities and essential safeguarding needs. Leadership content was scattered across tools, programmes were constrained by travel requirements and multilingual support was difficult to manage.
WAGGGS selected Open Social because it offered:
- One unified platform for learning, leadership and volunteer participation
- Multilingual access in English, French, Spanish and Arabic, plus machine translation
Granular roles and permissions suited for leaders, volunteers and youth - Safety, security and transparency for sensitive discussions and safeguarding
Open Social aligned with WAGGGS’ vision of a safe, accessible and scalable environment for global participation.

Active engagement through tailored tools and support
Manuela Capraro, Deputy Head for Learning and Leadership Development, explains Campfire’s impact:
“We use Open Social, who we call Campfire as our digital home. Campfire is the space where our global community comes together online for peer-to-peer learning, volunteer engagement and blended programmes.”
She adds:
“Leaders need confidential spaces for sensitive topics but girls and volunteers also need places that are open and welcoming. Open Social gives us that flexibility while keeping safety and safeguarding at the centre.”
Campfire brings learning, leadership and peer support into one environment where participants can follow structured programmes, meet in small groups, attend live sessions and collaborate across regions. It includes public areas, logged-in communities and protected leadership spaces with manual verification and codes of conduct.
With rich moderation tools and reporting workflows, safeguarding is operationalized across the movement. Machine translation and multilingual content ensure girls’ voices can be heard from every region. Campfire makes WAGGGS’ global programmes more inclusive and reduces manual work so staff can focus on impact rather than administration.
And together, WAGGGS and Open Social are building digital infrastructure that supports girl-led change worldwide, grounded in safety, inclusion and accessibility.
