This long partnership meant the moment the Drupal AI initiative started to gain momentum, together we were ready to turn early community prototypes into product features that could support organizations at scale. Gaia AI is the result of that shared commitment.
A core strength of this collaboration is how it transforms unstructured conversations into insights. Community discussions usually hold rich knowledge, but it’s hard to surface patterns, relevance or sentiment at scale. Gaia AI uses the models developed through Drupal AI to add structure where there was none. This enables better reporting, smarter automation and clearer context for community managers.

Instead of treating moderation as a binary battle against spam, Gaia AI evaluates how each contribution fits the ongoing conversation. Traditional translation tools offer literal accuracy, yet they can’t help users navigate tone or cultural nuance. Gaia AI, powered by the Drupal AI research, shows how AI can support more confident participation by offering translations that adapt to multi-cultural expectations. This reduces barriers and encourages more and more people to contribute, discuss and truly engage.
Underlying all this is Open Social's commitment to sovereignty. Organizations stay in control of their data and can adapt tools to their own needs. Because Gaia AI is grounded in open source principles, its innovations can be reused across the broader ecosystem. When a feature is built for a community platform, it can often benefit websites, knowledge portals or other tools used by the same organization. This creates a shared value cycle that proprietary systems rarely offer.
Finally, our collaboration with Drupal AI and FreelyGive has shown that AI innovation is strongest when non-developers are part of the process. While developers built the technical backbone, community managers shaped the prompts, tone and behaviour of Gaia AI tools.
